Does your home need a new roof? You’ll have to hire a roofer for the job. But where do you start? It’s a good idea to call a few places, get a few quotes, and make some comparisons. Just like you would shop around before buying a car, you should do the same when looking for a roofer. After all, your roof is the biggest investment you’ll make in your home!
Here are some tips.
Do Your Research
Roofers vary a lot in price and service. You would think there wouldn’t be such a big discrepancy between roofing companies’ prices, but there is. That’s why it’s so important to first narrow your roofers down to a few selections. Look for experience, years in business, reputation and good reviews.
Once you have a couple, you’ll want to start calling each and getting prices.
Trust Your Gut
Don’t underestimate the power of intuition. When your gut tells you something’s not quite right, listen to it. Sometimes you talk to a roofer and they have really low prices but you get the sense that’s something is off. There are many “pop up” roofing companies that come and go, especially with the big storms that roll through the area.
If a roofer can’t prove they have a license, or if they won’t put a price quote in writing, go on to the next name on the list. Once you hit on a roofer you get a good feeling from, stick with them, even if their prices aren’t the lowest on your list.
Check the Better Business Bureau Rating
Better Business Bureau is a watchdog organization that looks out for consumers and businesses to keep their best interests in mind. They play a critical role in helping to resolve issues and support businesses in the community. They rate local businesses based on many factors, so look for high ratings from this organization. Here at Ferris Roofing, we are proud to have an A+ rating on the BBB.
Ask Around
Referrals are easy to get. Go on social media, check their reviews, ask friends and family which roofers they have used in the past. New to the area? Try Nextdoor, a neighborhood hub for trusted connections and the exchange of helpful information, goods, and services.
Compare Estimates
While estimates don’t represent a guaranteed final figure, they are a great jumping off point. Make sure that the prices you’re comparing between companies are consistent. For example, if one company quotes standard shingles and another one quotes Class 4, there will be a large price difference because of the product quality in question. And always remember: if an estimate seems too good to be true, it probably is.
